Scripture for when worry will not let you rest.
If you took a careful walk through the Bible counting how many times the words "fear not" or "be not afraid" appear, you would find them many, many times over — some have counted as many as 365, one for every day of the year. The number itself is less important than what it means: Scripture knows fear is one of the most common conditions of the human heart. God meets it directly and tenderly, again and again.
Fear is not a moral failure. Even the prophets and the apostles felt it. What Scripture cautions against is the kind of fear that drives us away from God or freezes us where we stand. The remedy Scripture gives is not a pep talk — it is presence. The six verses on this page are all built around the same quiet promise: "I am with thee."
Notice how God answers fear in Isaiah 41:10. He does not minimize the situation. He does not tell the fearful person to "get over it." He says, in plain terms, "I am with thee... I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." That is four promises stacked one on top of another. God responds to fear with His own steady self.
Joshua 1:9 was given to a man stepping into a job he never asked for — leading Israel after Moses' death. The Lord did not promise Joshua an easy path. He promised His presence: "the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." Centuries later, David sang Psalm 23 with the same confidence: "though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." The fear is real. So is the company.
Practical truth: when fear is loud, do not start by trying to talk yourself out of it. Start by remembering Who is with you. The apostle Paul puts it bluntly in 2 Timothy: God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Fear is not the spirit you were given. It is a passing weather. The presence of God is the climate.
Isaiah 41:10
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Psalm 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Romans 8:31
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
Lord, my mind has been running ahead of me into all the ways a thing could go wrong. Quiet me. Remind me that You are with me — not far off, not distant, but here, in this room, in this moment. I lay down the what-ifs. Take them. I cannot carry them and trust You at the same time. Strengthen me with the spirit You actually gave me: power, love, and a sound mind. Thank You that fear is not the last word over my life. You are. In Jesus' name, amen.
